Based on estimated MEG demand in 2018 at more than 31 million ton, with 90% from polyester, and more than 14 million ton new MEG capacity scheduled during 2018-2023, Mr. Borneo predicts that utilization rate of MEG capacities will decline to 73% from current 81%.

The conference comes to a conclusion with Cao Wenting, Senior Analyst of CCFEI analyzing MEG Trade Logic in a Period of Capacity Expansion. She suggests that before the release of new PTA capacities, combining PTA backwardation and MEG contango is a relative safe choice, and current arbitrage of MEG spots/futures hedging may be less vulnerable to price changes compared with trading MEG alone.
